Grayia spinosa

This tough, mid-size desert shrub makes its home in the poorest, driest soils. It is dioecious, meaning the plants are either male or female. The flowers of both are unremarkable, but when the female plants are in fruit, the bracts surrounding the fruit swell and turn a beautiful red color.
