Buckwheats and Butterflies

There are many reasons to love buckwheats–this year at Draggin’ Wing we grew fifteen(!) different ones. I love them because they make for reliable landscape plants in a low water garden, they bloom at different times and they are beautiful.
Another reason to love buckwheats is that for a number of butterfly species they are a crucial source of food for developing larvae as well as nectar for adults. The butterfly in the photo is a Square-spotted or a Dotted Blue and it is feeding on Strict Buckwheat in a local garden. Buckwheats seem to have a special relationship with blues, hairstreaks and metalmarks, all smallish but beautiful butterflies.
So, if you want more butterflies in your garden, plant buckwheats!
