Fireweed

Hiking recently in the foothills around Bogus Basin, I came across stands of Fireweed in seed, putting on a striking fall display. These patches remind me that beauty in the garden can come from many sources–flowers, of course, but also the structure of stems, the architecture of leaves and, as in this case, a profusion of seedheads. The seeds of Fireweed are incredibly tiny. Each one of the fluffy little tufts holds hundreds of them, and they will soon be drifting across the mountainside ready to catch, settle and create a new stand Fireweed.
